About Cancer

Cancer can start any place in the body. It starts when cells grow out of control and crowd out normal cells. This makes it hard for the body to work the way it should.

Cancer can be treated very well for many people. In fact, more people than ever before lead full lives after cancer treatment.

Here we will explain what cancer is and how it’s treated.

WHAT IS CANCER

Screening

Cancer screening involves testing apparently healthy people for signs of the disease. It can save lives by finding cancers at an early stage, or even preventing them. Screening is not the same as the tests a person may have when doctors are diagnosing or treating cancer.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms are both signals of injury, illness, disease – signals that something is not right in the body. Cancer is a group of diseases that can cause almost any sign or symptom. The signs and symptoms will depend on where the cancer is, how big it is, and how much it affects the organs or tissues. If a cancer has spread (metastasized), signs or symptoms may appear in different parts of the body.

Diagnosis

Cancer can cause many different symptoms. Most often these symptoms are not caused by cancer, but by benign tumors or other problems. If you have symptoms that last for a couple of weeks, your doctor will do a physical exam and order tests or other procedures to find out what is causing your symptoms.

Staging

Stage refers to the extent of your cancer, such as how large the tumor is, and if it has spread. Knowing the stage of your cancer helps your doctor:

  • Understand how serious your cancer is and your chances of survival
  • Plan the best treatment for you
  • Identify clinical trials that may be treatment options for you

CANCER RISK FACTORS

5 MAIN RISK FACTORS FOR CANCER

Genetics

Some people have an increased risk of particular types of cancer because they have an inherited gene fault.

Age

Advancing age is the most important risk factor for cancer overall, and for many individual cancer types.

Environment

Numerous environmental factors increase the risk of developing cancer.

Lifestyle

Around 4 in 10 cancers could be prevented by lifestyle changes. Making these changes doesn’t guarantee that you won’t get cancer, but they will make it less likely and will improve your general health.

Mental Illness

Mental illness such as depression and stress can increase the risk of some diseases like cancer

Study finds melanoma biomarkers predicting checkpoint blocker response Scientists at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center (DF/BWCC) have identified biomarkers in melanoma that could help tailor immunotherapy treatments to maximize the benefits for patients while reducing the likelihood of severe side effects. While the utility of these biomarkers needs to be validated in future clinical trials,…
